The People's Balearic Disco
German based musician and producer Ulrich Schnauss described by Drowned in Sound as ‘an institution in shoegaze-related circles’ is a huge presence in ambient electronica. Debut release ‘Far Away Trains Passing By’ (2001) caught the attention of Berlin electronica label CCO and Domino Records, while Ulrich’s 2007 album ‘Goodbye’ won acclaim on both sides of the Atlantic, with the NME and Spin both awarding the disc 8/10. New LP ‘A Long Way to Fall’ released in late January is already picking up positive notices, with Drowned in Sound describing the collection as ‘bordering on the cinematic’. Main support comes from Marconi Union, whose Brian Eno-inspired works saw the trio feature in Time Magazine’s Best Inventions of the Year 2011 for their track ‘Weightless’, described as ‘the world's most relaxing song... 8 min. 10 sec. of aural bliss’. Completing the bill is fellow Mancunian denizen Begin, the project of DJ James Holroyd. A resident of legendary Leeds’ club Back to Basics since 1991 Holroyd has been The Chemical Brothers’ tour DJ for the past 15 years in addition to stints at Ibiza’s Cafe Del Mar. Blissed-out visuals on the night are supplied by Nat Urazmetova, whose moving images have seen the Goldsmiths’ graduate work with Domino Records, Rough Trade and London venue The Roundhouse in addition to forging a collaboration with Ulrich Schnauss.
